February 2008 - Drs. John and Julie Gottman with Richard Boswell and Joy Allen at the conclusion of The Art and Science of Love Workshop in Seattle, Washington

A Certified Gottman Therapist
Richard Boswell, Joy Allen, and Joan Hoffman, were trained and certified by The Gottman Institute and Drs John and Julie Gottman as Gottman Couples Therapists and Gottman Couples Workshop Leaders. They each bring over 25 years of clinical experience and went through the Gottman Certification process together. They have been to Seattle, Washington many times for training, annual meetings of The Gottman Institute, roving at couples workshops and participating in leadership teams.

The program to become a Certified Gottman Therapist includes the completion of the following three levels of training:
  1) Level I – Marital Therapy: A Research-Based Approach – A two-day professional workshop by Dr. John Gottman, either in person or on DVD/videotape
  2) Level II – Gottman Method Couples Therapy: Assessment and Intervention – a four or five-day training led by Drs. John and Julie Gottma
  3) Level III – The Certification Program:
    a. Workshop Practicum: a four-day workshop led by Dr. Julie Gottman.
    b. Clinical Consultation: at least 8 individual sessions or 12 group sessions of consultation with a Gottman Relationship Clinic Senior Therapist and Consultant.
    c. Tape Review: submission of DVD/video tapes for review by a Senior Gottman Relationship Clinic Therapist Tape Reviewer. Based on those videotapes, the therapist must have received confirmation from their Consultant that they have qualified to be a Certified Gottman Therapist.

Without this written certification, clinicians are not qualified to use the Gottman name when representing themselves or their work in therapy, workshops, classes, written material and/or presentations.

Certified Gottman Therapist - Couples Workshop LeaderThe
Gottman Couples Workshop Leader Certification includes another level of training which involves attending and shadowing advanced clinicians at the workshop and then roving at The Art and Science of Love: A Weekend Workshop for Couples in Seattle presented by Drs. John and Julie Gottman. Subsequently clinicians can then participate in the Gottman Couples Workshop Leaders five-day training. The first training for this occurred in April 2006 and the second training occurred in October 2007.
